As we head into mid-summer the news from the sector is mixed as this issue reveals. The indications are that the sector is thriving: participation is widening and deepening, the internet is spurring artists to take their practice into new and exciting directions and positive media coverage suggests our advocacy campaigns are alive and working. On the other hand, the impact of the recession is only now feeding through in the form of budget cuts: storm clouds on the still blue horizon. With a view to making the Digest the relevant practical resource for the cultural sector we want it to be, this issue draws together best thinking on how to weather that storm.

Issue 51 contains eighteen up to the minute reports on leadership, resources (advocating for them, managing them and growing them), of how we tell our story – a critique of current evaluation methods and three fascinating studies of how the internet is impacting on culture and cultural practitioners across the globe.

News from cultural portals, music, dance and design, the Cultural Olympiad and film.

Excited Atoms: An Exploration of Virtual Mobility in the Contemporary Performing Arts takes the theme of collaboration into the virtual world.and aims ‘to give more visibility to those who are already working in this field and will tempt those who are not yet to let their curiosity and creativity lead them there.’

We hope you find inspiration and insight in the contents of this issue. I certainly did!
